The best time to start is now
Summary
We often want to start new things on arbitrary days, like January 1. But, is that really useful?[00:00:00] You're listening to the Daily Five, an experimental podcast by Aurooba, where I talk about something for five minutes. So let's get to it, shall we? So, because my birthday is on December 31st, whenever I wanna try or start something. And that idea comes to me in December. I often wait till January 1st, or you know, or maybe just my birthday, December 31st to start it.
[00:00:40] But when I started this podcast, I did it on December 27th, Mountain Time, and that is different for me. . But in keeping with the, I guess, ethos of this [00:01:00] podcast, you know, you can start something new whenever you want there. You don't have to start on a particular day or a particular time. You can start right now if you.
[00:01:18] I mean, yes, there's something nice and cool about starting on, let's say a Monday or the first day of the month, or the first day of the year, new Year's resolutions, and their eventual downfall come to mind. But it's more important to start and to start in a sustainable way. If you haven't read the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear, that's a pretty good one on the topic.
[00:01:54] I don't think it's quite as simple as James describes in the book, but almost [00:02:00] never is. Almost nothing ever is really just because you understand how you can form habits, for example, doesn't mean that it's easy to implement, right? Uh, in that same way, . Just because you start on the first day of the month or the first day of the year or the first day of the week, does not mean that you are now gonna succeed, even though that's a really nice clean start, an arbitrary, perfect little start to whatever our new project is or task or habit or plan, but.
[00:02:42] if you start right now, I don't know. I think there's something kind of, irreverent, but in a good way about that. But starting right when you have thought of it. [00:03:00] I mean, it took me like two hours to set this podcast up, but. , I published it and it's live, and it's on an arbitrary, random day and it's starting in the middle of the week.
[00:03:18] But that's exciting. You know the, I mean, you're not born on a perfect day. There's people born on every single day of the year, and that becomes their beginning. . So I think beginnings are great because they're beginnings and they're special because they're beginnings and they can happen whenever, and it's far more important to just find a way to start sooner than later, not so soon that you don't come up with a plan.
[00:03:53] But action is better than inaction in most cases. I [00:04:00] think. , obviously, you know, if you're mad at someone and you wanna start a fight or something, , don't start a fight. Think about it first. But when it comes to creative projects and you know, other endeavors of the entrepreneurial type, it matters more that you begin in some small way and it's important that you start small.
[00:04:25] For the most part, I think the most successful things start small. , but start because that's the first step and it's easier to take the second step if you've taken the first one already.
[00:04:44] Thanks for listening. Talk to you tomorrow.
