What do you do when things don't go according to plan?
Summary
a slightly unfinished thought and a mini pep talk on how to keep doing the important things even when you weren't able to start the way you planned.[00:00:00] You are listening to the Daily Five, an experimental podcast by Aurooba, where I talk about something for five minutes. So let's get to it, shall we? What do you do when things don't go as planned? So this morning I woke up with a migraine and if you've listened to some of the past episodes, you know that my typical routine is to wake up in the morning, do yoga with my spouse, and then sit down and record this podcast episode, and then I start work and do the rest of my day.
[00:00:42] And it all hinges on me waking up at a certain time so that I can do a certain thing with my spouse, plan our day, do the things that we do in the morning. Except this morning I woke up with a migraine, which meant that I was [00:01:00] sensitive to light and my head hurt, and I could not get out of bed on time.
[00:01:08] Now, typically in the past, what would've happened is I would've said, this day is a freaking wash. You know? Okay, I'll try again tomorrow. and anything new that I was trying to do today, I would not do it. You know, I would just do the urgent things, the need to do things that have to happen today and other than that, lay about and maybe wallow in some self-pity.
[00:01:37] And don't get me wrong, there are days when that is okay, but there are also days when you can demand better from yourself. So I am sitting here demanding better from myself. So here's what I did instead, I allowed myself to take care of myself, when I was dealing with [00:02:00] something like a migraine, I slept an hour extra,
[00:02:05] I woke up slowly. I did what I needed to do in order to manage my pain. I'm actually pretty okay now. And then I decided that just because I didn't wake up on time and just because my spouse has already gone to work does not mean that I cannot do my day and do the things that I have committed to doing; because turns out right now I'm okay, which means I am fully capable of doing those things even if it's not at that exact time I planned.
[00:02:38] ISo at this time it was an hour and a half after I would normally be doing everything, but I woke up, I got dressed, I did yoga on my own, and here I am sitting here at my computer recording my podcast episode. Did I have to adjust my schedule a little bit and [00:03:00] move a couple things around so that I could still do the important things?
[00:03:04] Yes. The key word is important. Do the important things. I have decided that it is important to me to keep up these new practices and habits that I am trying to make a regular part of my life. These things that eventually I would like to be second nature to me. I think this is, this is what grit is, or at least it's the act of what a gritty person would.
[00:03:35] And in my quest to become grittier, this, you know, checks that box. And I am a little bit happy and a little bit proud of myself for waking up this morning and doing yoga, and now sitting here recording my podcast episode and knowing that I'm still gonna do all the things that matter to me today. And [00:04:00]
[00:04:00] Tomorrow when everything is fine and I don't have a migraine, I will continue to be on track and I will not have lost a day, and I will not have lost my streak. And I can feel pretty good about that. You know, we often think that, oh, if this didn't go exactly the way I wanted it to, I should just try again tomorrow.
[00:04:24] We love fresh start, but if you want, the next moment can be your fresh start and you shouldn't wait till the next, I don't know, arbitrary day for it instead, you know? Yeah. That's what I've got for you today. Thanks for listening. Talk to you tomorrow.
