Make the thing you wish you had.

Summary

An unfinished thought about creating the things we want to see in the world, that we wish someone would make for us.

[00:00:00] You're listening to the Daily Five, an experimental podcast by Aurooba, where I talk about something for five minutes. So let's get to it, shall we? Back in 2010, '11, '12, those years. I remember knowing that I could roll out of bed on any given morning, and have a fresh batch of blog posts from my favorite bloggers waiting for me in my RSS reader on my phone, especially if it was a weekday.

[00:00:43] And I had a few core bloggers that I followed, and I loved their work. I loved their writing. I loved the way their mind worked, and pretty much anything they would write about or talk [00:01:00] about, I would be interested. Right? It wasn't the topic that was as interesting to me as the people and the way they wrote about things.

[00:01:10] And at some point that stopped, you know, uh, daily bloggers kind of stopped. And I think at, you know, it got taken over by YouTube for a little while. There were these daily vlogs. I remember Lily Singh IIsuperwomanII to many, uh, that was her handle, she used to do these daily vlogs, and I remember watching those, but I don't know, something about reading blogs at the time just felt so much more awesome to me, you know?

[00:01:47] I thought about it. I think about it a lot actually. How that was like a really wonderful time to be in the world of blogging and [00:02:00] to be maybe a consumer even, of blogs because there were these awesome daily blogging like routines that were happening at the time. And so I think one of the reasons why the idea of a daily podcast appealed to me was because I wish that that existed agaim.

[00:02:26] And there are daily bloggers, even now, not very many. And I have a sense that blogging is kind of making a comeback, but blogging to me now, no longer just means the written word. I think of it more as the original word, which is to log on the web. Right? Blog comes from weblog, and I [00:03:00] just feel like I wanted to create this daily thing because that's what I wanted.

[00:03:07] That's what I was looking for, and I think there's a lesson in there, you know? We should try to create the things that we wish existed. Create the thing that you want to see, the thing that you wish you could have. I think that's different from the old fallacy of "build it and they will come" because just because you make something does not mean that you will have an audience.

[00:03:39] But if you have any chance of having an audience, if that is a goal of yours, then you do have to make something. And if you like what you are creating, at the very least you have an audience of one: yourself. Because we all go back and listen, watch, [00:04:00] write, read everything that we create, right? If you're like me, you probably listen or you know, look back and review your work like three or four times in different mindsets, trying to see it from different perspectives.

[00:04:14] And so at least you have yourself as an audience. But if you like something, there is a good chance that there are other people who will like it too. So I think that if you feel like something is missing in the world, you should see if you could create something like that and give that awesome to someone else, including yourself, you know?

[00:04:45] thanks for listening. Talk to you tomorrow.
